WORLD PARA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP | SUNDAR SINGH GURJAR BECOMES WORLD CHAMPION
India's para-athletes have opened the account at 2017 World Para Athletics Championships on Day 1 with a GOLD. Sundar Singh Gurjar triumphed in the men's javelin throw F46 with a personal best of 60.36m. Sundar thus becomes first Indian Para Athlete to win GOLD at World Para Athletic Championships
Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Priyantha Herath wins silver with 57.93m and Guo Chunliang of China was third with a season’s best 56.14m . Anther Indian Rinku Hooda Finished 4th with another PB of 55.12mThis was nothing less than redemption for Gurjar, who suffered a miserable heartbreak at the Rio Olympics a year ago.
Sundar had set a national record in javelin throw and went on to represent in Rio.
He saw it as his day, the day he would win a medal for India.
Minutes later, everything changed. India won a medal, but the medalists didn't include his name. The reason was tragic, as the 21-year old missed his call, failing to understand the accent of the announcers, as he reached the registration desk only a minute late to find himself disqualified.
Sundar, after the win, said: "I was very disappointed after Rio, as I had prepared intensely and ultimately, could not compete. My morale was completely broken then, but I am delighted with this comeback to competition. I had trained hard for the World Championships as well, but not as much as I had done for Rio.
"I wanted to win. That was all that I had in mind. I had prepared for this day since the last four years of my life and wanted to make it count," Said the World Champion Sundar.
In other events of the Day, Virender Dhankar finished 4th in F57 Shot-Put. Ekta Bhyan finished 6th in F51 Club Throw(Women's)
