Women's World Cup Updates - India

The ICC Women's World Cup Updates

The ICC Women's World Cup is slowly reaching its climax now with just 2 matches remaining in what has been the most competitive world cup which is quite evident by the fact that India & South Africa made it to the semis along with the superpowers in the women's game England & Australia. While England & South Africa locked horns yesterday in the 1st semifinal, India will take on 6 time world champions Australia in the other Semi-Final tomorrow.

India began the tournament with a bang, beating the hosts in their opening game. Then they made it 4 games out of 4 against the Windies, Pakistan & SriLanka before faltering against South Africa and the mighty Aussies. But in their last encounter against the Kiwis in a do-or-die, they made an epic comeback by bulldozing through mighty Kiwi batting lineup. The openers have been blowing hot & cold in this tournament for India, since the game against England, especially Smriti Mandhana after the start she got with a 90 and 100 in the first two matches. Mithali Raj has been the backbone of the middle order as usual. Whereas Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur,Veda Krishnamurthy & Sushma Verma all have small cameos to their credit. The bowling has been hugely dependent on their traditional strength spin. Bisht, Gayakwad, Sharma, and Poonam all coming good at some stage. But the fast bowlers need to prove their worth against quality opponents like Australia.

The world champions on the other hand have cruised past all their opponents except the hosts England, the match went very close though.Their batting has looked solid and they have the ability to bat deep. Meg Lanning inspite of missing some games due to her shoulder injury has scored heavily including the 153 against Lankans while chasing. The other inform player is all rounder Elysse Perry. Even their bowling has been very effective in the league stages most of the times.

Both these teams have met each other 42 times in ODIs out of which the Aussies have won an impressive 34 games which also includes the 2005 world cup final against India. So obviously, the odds are stacked heavily in favour of the defending champions. In the league game between these two sides, India were found wanting in terms of the run rate. Australia easily chased down the 227 target with 8 wickets in hand to stamp their dominance. But India have to a large extent rectified their mistakes by giving a near perfect batting & bowling display against the Kiwis compared to their game against Australia.

Coming Thursday, when both these sides take on each other, the Southern Stars will definitely start as the favourites to play in the final against England at Lords on Sunday, but they will face a very dangerous Indian side in the semis, as at Derby India have won all their games. But Cricket is a funny game and you never know whats is in store for us.We hope that Indian team will continue in this match from where they left on the field against the kiwis and comes out the winner, making it to the Finals of World Cup after 12 years.
