INDIA CREATES HISTORY - FINISHES WITH HIGHEST NUMBER OF MEDALS EVER
World Para Athletics Championship came to an end yesterday. 24 Male and 5 Female Indian athletes participated across 23 events. Though Rio Medalist Deepa Malik missed out on a medal and Rio Gold winning High Jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu couldn't participate owing to injury, it was a happy outing otherwise for the rest of the squad. India finished the 2017 edition of World Para Athletics Championship at 34th position in the medals tally bagging 5 medals in total, including 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze. It is the best ever performance from the Indian team, both in terms of number of medals won and finishing highest ever in the medals tally. It is also the 2nd time that India have won a Gold Medal in World Championship, the previous one being Devendra Jhajharia in 2013 in F46 Javelin Throw. Since the beginning of World Para Athletics Championship in 2011, India have won 1 Silver in 2011(finishing 55th); 1 Gold in 2013(finishing 36th) and 2 Silver in 2015(finishing 50th).
